Jack L. Short, 74, formerly of Libby

Jack L. Short, a Navy veteran and retired barber, passed away Sept. 24, 2012, at the Hi Line Retirement Center from cancer.

Graveside services will take place at the veteran’s section of the Malta Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012.  

Condolences for the family may be left at www.kirkwoodfuneralhome.com.  Cremation has taken place.  Kirkwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jack was born in Landusky, Mont., on June 29, 1938, to John J. and Lilly (Kelsey) Short.  

Jack completed his education at Landusky, Zortman, and Malta.  

Upon completing high school, he joined the U.S. Navy.  He was in the Navy from 1958 to 1962.  While in the Navy he was stationed at the Great Lakes but spent most of his time on the east coast serving on a destroyer.  

After being discharged from the Navy, he attended barber college in Spokane, Wash.  He barbered in Troy and Libby before moving to Kalispell.  

Jack also worked in the lumber mills and worked as a bartender.  In recent years, Jack was a bartender at Kid Curry’s in Malta. 

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.  

He is survived by his son Shane Michael Short of Billings; stepdaughters, Shauney Fisher of Libby and Shanna Hopper of Billings; brother, Jim (Anita) Short of Libby, sister, Carol (Richard) Winchell of Great Falls; niece Teresa Short Robinson of Malta, nephews, Kevin and Darren Short and Kelsey and Bill Koke.  Also surviving Jack are three aunts who were very special to him, Thelma Seyfert of Great Falls, Rose Fore of Libby, and Martha Thompson of Phoenix.
