Wrestling: Sweedman 2nd at Rocky Mountain; LHS loses by 1 point to Ronan

Libby High School’s Kyle Sweedman finished second in the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic wrestling tournament in Missoula on Saturday but his loss in the championship bout came to an old nemesis – Brock Picard.

The Polson grappler snagged his third victory this season over Sweedman with a 5-2 decision in the finals at 171 pounds. Overall, Libby had five wrestlers earn top-six placings that added up to a 15th-place finish among the 30 schools competing.

Sweedman cruised into the championship match with pins over Zach Heigel of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Kevin Moore of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Casey Schaub of Havre.

Kyle Leir placed fifth at 135, Kody Berget was sixth at 189, Mike Roby placed seventh at 125 and Cody Elliott ended up eighth at 140. Among those not placing but winning matches for the Greenchain were Mitch Haugen (130), Robin Kyes (152) and Austin Bailey (160).

Earlier in the week, the Greenchain lost a dual by one point for the second time in two weeks.

Ronan’s Cameron Neiss pinned Libby’s Kyle Leir in the dual’s final bout on Thursday night for a 42-41 victory. The pin occurred with 37 seconds remaining in the second period.

Winning matches for the Greenchain were Mike Roby (125), Mitch Haugen (130), Cody Elliott (140), Dylan Berget (145), Kyle Sweedman (171) and Kody Berget (215).

Each school forfeited victories at two weight classes. On the mat, Libby won six of the 11 matches.

Up next for LHS will be the State Class A Duals on Friday and Saturday at Lewistown.
