Letter: Trying to burn off the dead grass

| April 14, 2010 12:00 AM

Dear Editor:

(The letter writer addressed his submission to “Mother Nature:”)

You have created a beautiful land here, believe me, I never tire of looking at and playing on those Cabinet Mountains.

And, Mother Nature, I want to thank you for a rather mild winter, although the snow pack is a little below normal, you seem to be making up for that lately. So, I will move along to my next topic, which is you seem to be bringing us spring on some kind of willy-nilly schedule.

This spring was really really early, while last spring was rather late! This poses a problem for me, as you know, you have blessed me with a lush lawn, and after the winter I am left with lots of dead grass around the house.

Now you have seen me out there with thatching blades and de-thatching rakes, ect., but you and I know nothing works better than burning it off in the spring. And it sure needed burning off by mid-March, and by April 1 (when the “burn season” starts) the new grass was up and it was too late to burn.

Now before you go pointing out that “Lincoln County Public Health” has the same policy with DEQ as Flathead County and the burn season could have been moved here just as easily as they did it there (they moved it), let me remind you, this is Libby … and I have a snowball’s chance in hell at moving the burn season (for example, calls and e-mails … a waste of time).

So, Mother Nature, next spring it would be greatly appreciated by me (and I’m sure a neighbor or two) if you would have the snow gone off the yard and the dead grass ready to burn at exactly April 1, 2011.

I’ll thank you in advance for another mild winter. (hint - hint).

John Derry
