Harley L. Newman

Harley L. Newman, 74, died Jan. 15, 2009 at his home in Libby.

He was born at Savina, Ohio on May 3, 1934 to Harley and Pauline (Hunter) Newman. In May 1953, he graduated from high school. After graduating, he worked on the farm until March 1955. At that time he was drafted into the U.S. Army and on May 17, he got married. Through the years, the couple had five children.

In March 1957, Mr. Newman was released from active duty and was then transferred to the Ohio Reserves. He was released from the reserves in March 1963 with an honorable discharge.

In the summer of 1957, he went to work for International Harvester, where he stayed until 1965. He then worked for Dick Roth on machinery until the fall of 1968. He moved to Tacoma, Wash., that fall, and then went to work on tractor-trailers for International Harvester.

In March 1970 he divorced, and in September 1970, went back to Ohio and worked for Dick Roth. Then in 1971, he worked for CR England and drove semis across the 48 states. He then went to Tacoma and drove for Parker Refrigeration.

In 1975, he married, Alice, and they both drove for Parker for the next year. In 1977, he went back to being a mechanic and worked for a steam plant in Washington. In 1980, they moved to Tonasket, Wash., where he owned a shop for a while then went to work for a rancher as driver of semis and as a mechanic.

In 1985, they moved to Wauconda, Wash., after Mr. Newman sustained an injury on the job. They moved to Eureka in 1994 and then on to Libby in 1995 where he remained until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Leifur of Libby; children, Wendy Moore and husband Edward of Libby; Cindy Slossar, also of Libby; Ronald Anderson and wife Charlotte of Graham, Wash.; Ronna Anderson of Rochester, Wash.; Donna Averill of Spanway, Wash.; Patrick Anderson of Rochester, Wash.; grandchildren, S’Reena, Ashley, Maureen, Paulette, Andrea, Donald, Shawna, Sherri, John, Joey, Jesse, Michel, Duke, Cruiser, J’Sonn; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will take place at a later date.

Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby handled arrangements.
