Riverfront Blues Festival coming Aug. 29

The inaugural Riverfront Blues Festival comes to Libby’s Riverfront Park on Saturday, Aug. 29.

The event will feature an impressive lineup of blues artists from noon-11 p.m. at the Fred Brown Pavilion. Scheduled to appear are Kenny Neal, Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Back Adit, the Ben Rice Band, Bridge City Blues and Ken LaBarbara.

Proceeds will benefit Libby Revitalization Inc., Kootenai Heritage Council and the Libby Food Pantry.

Tickets for adults are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Student tickets are $10. Children 6 and under will be admitted free with a donation to the food pantry. Tickets are available online at www.riverfrontbluesfestival.net or call 293-9643.

Junior high plans 40th anniversary gathering

Libby Junior High marks its 40th anniversary this year and a special event has been organized for Friday, Aug. 28.

Several teachers and staff from Libby Junior High’s early days will return to Libby for a gathering at the Elk’s at noon on Aug. 28, followed by a tour of the building that afternoon.

An open house at the Elk’s will begin that evening at 7:30. Former students and community members are invited to stop by for a visit.

LHS volleyball squad tryouts begin Monday

Libby High School volleyball team tryouts begin Monday, Aug. 17, in the gymnasium, head coach Cindy Ostrem-Johnston announced.

Practice times on Mondays and Tuesdays will run from 9-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. for sophomores, juniors and seniors, and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. for freshmen. Wednesdays schedule will run from 9-11:30 a.m. for sophomores, juniors and seniors and 1-3:30 p.m. for freshmen.

Players are required to complete a physical before trying out.

Library to show ‘Sesame Street’ classics

The Libby Public Library will present classic episodes of the children’s television program, “Sesame Street,” as part of its Cheap Date Movie program.

On Saturday, Aug. 22 at noon, episodes from 1972, 1973 and 1974 will be featured.

Ignite the Nites blazes into Libby

Ignite the Nites – hosted by the Igniters Car Club – will run Friday and Saturday in Libby.

The fun begins Friday with the always-popular “Cruise the Gut” on Mineral Avenue. A Poker Run will go from 3-7:30 p.m. with the cruising scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and run until 9:30 p.m. At approximately 10 p.m., a neon and flame-throwing contest will be conducted.

Saturday’s events include the car show from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at around 3 p.m. A burnout contest will begin at 5 p.m. at the Old Millpond Motocross Park.

Registration runs from 3-8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Top bands gather for special event

The Libby High School Class of 1984 is hosting WOODROCK ’09 – Rockin’ the Ball Park – a five-band concert at Lee Gehring Field in Libby on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Featured bands include Mission Mountain Wood Band out of Montana and Aeromyth – Aerosmith Tribute out of Los Angeles.

The complete schedule includes – Slim Young Fro (3:15 p.m.), Sheldon Mountain Boys (4:05 p.m.), Back Adit (5:25 p.m.), Mission Mountain Wood Band (7 p.m.) and Aeromyth (10 p.m.).

The Class of 1969 along with the Class of 1984 will be celebrating reunions over the weekend but the public is invited to join them for the concerts. Among those playing will be Steve Riddle (Class of ’69) from the Mission Mountain Wood Band.

Proceeds from the event go to the American Legion baseball program, Turner Mountain Ski Area and the Hanley Memorial Fund.

Vendor Fair set for downtown

Northwest Community Health Center (formerly Lincoln County Community Health Center) will host its annual Vendor Fair on Saturday, Aug. 15 on Mineral Avenue in downtown Libby.

A variety of vendors will be on hand from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The event serves as a fundraiser for the health center’s Specialty Care Voucher Program.

Ruby Ridge memorial set

A Ruby Ridge Memorial event has been organized for Friday, Aug. 21 at Deep Creek and Ruby Creek in Naples, Idaho. The special gathering is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Cancer support group will not meet in August

The Libby/Troy Cancer Support and Information Groups will not meet in August.

The next meeting will be Monday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. in Libby.
