Group out to ‘Beat the Stigma’

The Lincoln Interagency Local Advisory Council plans to kick off Mental Health Awareness Month on Friday at 12:30 p.m. with a walk down Mineral Avenue from the eagle to the train station, chair Sunny Terry announced.

The local organization is hosting “Beat the Stigma” – a spring conference on mental health awareness set for Thursday, May 7, at the Western Montana Health Center in Libby.

Guest speakers at the May 7 event include Marianne Smith and Becky Stovall of the Western Montana Health Center, Mark Clark of Flathead Valley Chemical Dependency Center and Martina Nelson of Good Medicine Therapy.

The event will include discussion about mental health services, including suicide prevention, diagnosis and case management.

The Libby Interagency Local Advisory Council was formed in 1999 and meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 2-3 p.m. The Western Montana Health Center is located at 1469 S. Highway 2.

Baseball, softball event on Saturday

Libby youth baseball and softball players will participate in a parade and opening ceremonies on Saturday.

The parade will begin to lineup at 9 a.m. with the start time scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies at the local ballfields (located near Libby Cemetery) will begin at 10 a.m. and will include a raffle and drawings for prizes.

U Serve Libby’s annual meeting set

U Serve Libby Inc. plans to hold its annual meeting on Monday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the school district’s Central Administration Building.

The agenda includes election of the board of directors and the Libby Community Tennis Courts.

The meeting site is located at 724 Louisiana Ave. Refreshments will be served.

Diabetes self-care classes set this month

St. John’s Nutrition and Diabetes Support Services will be presenting three classes in May.

“Basic Diabetes Self-Care” will be held on Thursday, May 7 from 4-6 p.m. “What to Eat? Carbohydrate Counting” will be Thursday, May 14 from 4-5:30 p.m. “Keeping a Healthy Heart” will be Wednesday, May 20 from 4-5:30 p.m.

Marimba at Memorial Center

The nine-piece Tropical Montana Marimba Ensemble will take to the stage on Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Center in Libby.

The performance will serve as a fundraiser for the Troy Fine Arts Council and is being hosted in conjunction with the Kootenai Heritage Council.

School’s benefit auction May 9

Kootenai Valley Christian School’s 10th annual benefit auction is coming up on Saturday, May 9.

Bidding at the auction begins at 10 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Local businesses donated merchandise and purchased advertising on bid sheets.

Each class chose a theme for baskets to be auctioned off. Parents and students shop at local businesses to fill each basket.

Farmer’s Market event set

The Libby Farmer’s Market Spring Fest is coming on May 7.

The event will run from noon-6 p.m. at the Libby Area Chamber of Commerce parking lot. Activities include drawings, cookie decorating, food and drinks.

Archery club plans 3D shoot

Libby Archery Club’s 13th annual traditional 3D shoot will be held May 2-3 at Fawn Creek Campground.

The event is for recurves and long bows with no compounds allowed. Camping is available.

Stamp Club plans May 4 meeting

The Glacier Stamp Club plans to meet Monday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Kalispell Library’s downstairs meeting room.

A silent auction will be held and members, visitors and friends are welcome to participate. Sale items are expected to be ready for bidding at 6:30 p.m.

Kindergarten roundup for Libby Schools scheduled for Monday

Libby Public Schools is kicking off the 2009-10 school year with a kindergarten roundup for all children who will be age 5 on or before Sept. 10.

Registration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-noon on Monday, May 4, at the Plummer Center’s far east entrance.

Parents or legal guardians, who are required to attend, are asked to bring the child, birth certificate, child’s social security number, proof of immunizations and emergency contact information.

The school will provide Brigance Kindergarten Screening at the time of registration for children that have not already been screened.
