Libby High School’s Seth Wright opened up his final track season with the Loggers by taking first place in three events at the Libby Time Trials on Thursday afternoon.

Wright, who is headed to the University of Montana on a track scholarship, won the long jump (19-7 3/4), triple jump (42-9 3/4) and high jump (6-6).

“The 42-9 in the triple jump is an outstanding mark for this time of the year,” LHS track coach Ed Tabis said. “He said he wasn’t finishing … but he’ll work that out.”

Wright had some competition in the high jump at the three-school non-scoring meet. Troy’s Aaron Palmer cleared 6-4 to place second. Wright also nipped Palmer by just over 12 inches in the triple jump and got by teammate Joel Fuller by 18 inches in the long jump.

Will Lott, Kody Berget and T.J. Benson also recorded individual first-place finishes for the Logger boys. Lott won the 800-meter run (2:31.81), Berget took the 300 hurdles (44.04) and Benson won the pole vault (10-0).

It was the first action of the season for LHS after the Columbia Falls Invitational was cancelled on April 4.

“It was good for the kids to see what track meets are all about,” Tabis said. “We have a lot of young kids and with the circus atmosphere of a track meet, it can get a little confusing about what’s going on. They got one under their belts and we’ll work out those things like kids missing events.”

The Loggers also had a first-place relay team. The 4-by-400 team of Kody Berget, Reese Jensen, Kelly May and Dylan Berget covered the distance in 4:00.56.

Tabis mentioned several good performances for a first meet, including the efforts of sophomore sprinter Dietrick Coleman. Coleman, who came out for track to work on speed for football, placed in both the 100 and 200.

For the Troy boys, Palmer won as expected in the javelin with a toss of 183-2 – nearly 20 feet better than Libby’s Wright. Jacob Lopez, sophomore, won his first event of the season by taking the 400-meter dash in 57.44.

The Libby girls have fewer athletes on the Logger roster in comparison to the boys but did very well in the home meet with eight first-place finishes. Stephany Kluver won both the javelin (106-6) and discus (99-10).

“In the javelin, they used only a five-step approach … they’ll go back to a nine- or 10-step approach,” Tabis said. “Stephanie had a 106-6 and that’s very good. Rachel Sweedman at 91-7 with just half the approach and she also had a nice triple jump.”

Sweedman won the triple jump by just over a foot over teammate Kaila Forster with a 31-3.

The Lady Loggers also saw Devon Hoyer win the high jump (4-8) with a cast still on her hand while Erin Baker took first in the shot put (31-2 1/2). In the running events, Jenny Johnson won the 800 at 2:57.35.

Libby also took first in a pair of relays. The 400 relay team of Hoyer, Kluver, Sweedman and Forster covered the oval in 55.29 and the 1600 relay of Hoyer, Sweedman, Forster and Johnson won in 4:44.50.

Troy senior Molly Harpole was a double-winner for the Class B Trojans. Harpole sprinted the 100-meter dash in 13.21 and went 14-6 3/4 in the long jump for a pair of first-place finishes.

The Loggers were headed to the Class A Time Trials in Kalispell on Tuesday and will next compete on Thursday at the Thompson Falls Invitational. The Loggers will then go to the Bigfork Invite on Saturday.

The Trojans are also scheduled to compete at Thompson Falls on Thursday.
