Libby businessman Gerald “Jerry” Bennett defeated three candidates to win the Republican nomination for state representative of House District 1.

Bennett was favored by 76 percent of the voters.

He received 1,051 votes followed by Susan Ague with 171 votes, Ginny Emerson with 88 and Albert Ross Purviance with 61 votes.

“I am encouraged by those who made the effort to get out and vote,” said Bennett. “I would specifically like to thank those who supported me in the primary. I would also like to thank Susan Ague for her support and endorsement. I look forward to continued support and encouragement in the general election and on to Helena as God wills.”

Bennett is looking to replace State Rep. Ralph Heinert, who is stepping down after two terms.

Running unopposed were Republican incumbent Chas Vincent and Democrat Eileen Carney. The two will vie for the House District 2 seat on Nov. 4.

Democrat Timothy Linehan was unopposed for House District 1.
