Hard time at home for Trojans

The Trojans fell to Superior last Saturday, 52-40, also losing the night before to Thompson Falls, 74-47.

"Thompson Falls was as good as we knew they were," said Troy coach Tony Smith. "Their quickness and athleticism virtually overwhelmed us in every facet of the game."

Smith said the number one ranked Thompson Falls, who led throughout the game, is better than anyone in their league right now.

"They've beaten everyone by twenty points," he said. "A team like that reveals all of the things you need to work on to play at that level," he said, adding that it was great experience for the Trojans.

"It was a recognition on the part of our kids to learn what they have to do."

Smith noted some nice performances by Troy, including senior Joe Day, who contributed nine points. "He competed very well," said Smith, adding that praise to junior Shado Garrett, who had seven points.

Smith also mentioned sophomore post Brian Hammrich, who scored eight points in the game.

Smith said they couldn't recover from a 16-8 Superior lead in the first cover.

"They're extremely well-disciplined and well-coached," he said. "We felt we could compete with them. We got within six at half time, but then we got outscored in the third quarter by 8."

"It's obvious that as coaches we have a lot of work to do."

Smith said seniors Matt Rogers and Zack McDougall had good games, with McDougall scoring nine and defending extremely well. Smith also mentioned Clayton Kyriss (junior).

"We had some individuals play very hard, but obviously we need to get better as a team," said Smith. "We're just not even close and that's my responsibility."

Smith said they would address some issues and fundamental skills in their upcoming practices and that it was going to take some time.

"We have a lot of work to do in order to be competitive in our league," he said.

Looking forward to Plains and Noxon this Thursday and Saturday, Smith said they were both very talented teams.

Plains is picked to finish second in the league and Noxon is undefeated.

"We beat them last year in Noxon for the first time in several years," said Smith, adding "They're very well coached, so we'll have our hands full."
